Star Quest / Space Crusade – the first dungeon crawler set in the 41st nillenium

After the success of Hero Quest, a collaboration of MB games and Games Workshop, the two companies set out to replicate the success with a SciFi version, evolving from the original game design.

Learning from the original Hero Quest design flaws, Space Crusade, or Star Quest, as it was known in several markets, came with a variable game board made from several double sided tiles and 3D cardboard walls connecting them.

I really enjoyed the concept and got myself a copy including the expansions: Mission Dreadnought and Attack of the Eldar. As icing on the cake, I also got myself some neoprene game mats from France. Lovely prints and a slightly larger grid pattern to make the game slightly less packed.

The space marines were all painted as blood angels. Similarly to the Space Marine adventures series, I found the idea of different chapters competing a little silly.

Therefore, Blood Angels were the logical choice, matching well with my Marine collection. In order to tell the squads apart, I got some base extenders painted in red, yellow and blue.

The foes were painted in an harmonious colour scheme, with Orks and Gretchen sharing the bad moon colours, Chaos Marines/Dreadnoughts and Androids in Alpha Legion colours. Eldar in Saim Hann Red, matching the Space Marines nicely, albeit with nuanced differences.

Only the genestealers received different colours all together.
