Battlefleet Gothic – Necrons

Battlefleet Gothic was Games Workshops successor to Space Fleet. Set in the 41st millenium, players take control of gargantuan warships and fleets to engage in tense fleet battles, inspired by world war one naval warfare.

Back in 2012 during my undergrads, we used to play plenty of Battlefleet Gothic. Most frequently at one of the local Games Workshop stores in Berlin – a big shout out to the store manager Lars, who always kept a game table spare and encouraged players to kitbash and scratch build their own fleets from 40k kits, even after the game was discontinued.

One of my current fleets is this lovely Necron fleet, which I managed to acquire at a reasonable cost during the first lockdown back in 2020.

I experimented with base design to make the ships stand out on the tabletop. The method I developed, was inspired by graffiti artists. Being drawn to grittier, darker and more realistic paint schemes, the bases had to pop, or else the ships would have completely drowned on a dark space game mat.

What I came up with, was a natural beige-brown color scheme, which faded into balck around the edges, with powerful blue OSL for energy conduits and other light sources. To complement these colours, the nebulas on the bases were painted in a mix of green-turcquoise.
